Identification of novel plant architecture mutants in barley

چکیده

Abstract In grasses, biomass and grain production are affected by plant architecture traits such as tiller number, leaf size orientation. Thus, knowledge regarding their genetic basis is a prerequisite for developing new improved varieties. Mutant screens represent powerful approach to identify factors underpinning these traits: the Hor TILLUS population, obtained mutagenesis of spring two-row cultivar Sebastian, valuable resource this purpose in barley. study, 20 mutant families from population were selected evaluated angle range other agronomic using an unreplicated field design with Sebastian check cultivar. Principal Component Analysis revealed strong relationships among number tillers, upper canopy angle, yield-related traits. Comparison background that most mutants significantly differed wild-type multiple traits, including two more erect leaves four increased at least one phenological stage. Heatmap clustering identified main groups: first containing second high-tillering mutants. Among mutants, showed higher yield per compared Sebastian. The promising materials identification controlling tillering

The Genetic Architecture of Barley Plant Stature

Plant stature in temperate cereals is predominantly controlled by tillering and plant height as complex agronomic traits, representing important determinants of grain yield. This study was designed to reveal the genetic basis of tillering at five developmental stages and plant height at harvest in 218 worldwide spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) accessions under greenhouse conditions. The acces...

Root Hair Mutants of Barley

Almost sixty mutants with shortened or reduced root hairs or without root hairs at all have been isolated among 2000 M1 plant progenies (20.000 M2 seeds) of the spring barley cultivar “Lux” after sodium azide mutagenesis. One group of 25 mutants show fairly stable phenotype while 33 lines have unstable, indistinct or segregating phenotypes. The mutants were selected after 3 to 4 days growth in ...

Barley Brassinosteroid Mutants Provide an Insight into Phytohormonal Homeostasis in Plant Reaction to Drought Stress

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of steroid phytohormones, which regulate various processes of morphogenesis and physiology-from seed development to regulation of flowering and senescence. An accumulating body of evidence indicates that BRs take part in regulation of physiological reactions to various stress conditions, including drought. Many of the physiological functions of BRs are regulat...

Identification of genetic resources of field resistance to barley leaf rust in local germplasm of cultivated barley

The barley leaf rust has been important in recent years in Iran. In order to identify the genetic resources of resistance to this disease, 207 Iranian barley landraces were studied. The germplasms were investigated at the field of Iraqi-Mahalleh research station in Gorgan as the disease hotspot under natural incidence over three years. The results showed that four genotypes including KC18638 an...

Aberrant cell expansion in the elongation mutants of barley.

The elongation (elo) mutants of barley (Hordeum vulgare cv 'Himalaya') are a class of dwarf plants with defects affecting cell expansion. The phenotypes of mutants in three of the elo loci (elo1, elo2 and elo3) are recessive to the wild-type allele, and the mutations at elo-4 and elo-5 are semi-dominant. Allelism tests showed that elo1, elo2 and elo3 were at separate loci, and mapping data indi...
